Using Eucerin Aquaphor For Tattoo Aftercare

I've been getting tattoos since I turned 18, and now at 34 I have somewhere around 14 or15 with no plans to stop anytime soon.  Though the years I've been given different advice on how to handle the aftercare of my tattoos.  I think with my first few I was told to clean it with liquid bacitracin a few times a day, the next few bacitracin ointment, and in more recent years I was told to use a quality lotion like Aveeno.  I always went with what I was advised, or went with something similar and my heal process was always the same.  Sore a few days until my tattoo would form a light dry sometimes scabby surface, then I'd wait for that scabby area to heal and peel doing my best not to pick at it so that color didn't bleed out making imperfect spots on my tattoo. After that phase was over and it stopped peeling, I'd finally have my healed tattoo that felt like natural soft skin.  Until recently I just thought that was how it worked.  That's how all tattoos healed.  I was wrong.

My latest tattoo is necklace that circles my entire neck and has a large cameo on my chest.  It was done by Larry Spano of Defiance Tattoos in Kent OH.  The guy is amazing and I feel that he is the best in our area.  This was my second by him.  He did a squirrel that wraps around my arm last year that I absolutely love and he was the only tattoo artist I felt completely comfortable getting a necklace done by since it was one that will almost always be exposed and become a large part of my self image.

When it was over he asked how I took care of past tattoos as he was covering my new tatt with plastic wrap and tape and I told him lotion and he said he wanted me to try something different.  His exact words were "I'm kind of going to force you to try this instead".  My necklace was detailed and had a bit of white shading in it which he said liked to bleed out and disappear a little easier then darker shades.

He told me to get Eucerin Aquaphor healing ointment and each night I was to cover my new tattoo in a thin layer of it and then to cover that with plastic wrap and tape and sleep that way.  When I woke up, gently wash away the goo that had built up overnight in a warm shower.  After the shower put on a really light layer of more Aquaphor and that was it for the day. I was to do that for three nights.  After those three night, just put a light layer of Aquaphor on it two times a day.

It feels a lot like Vaseline.

This is my tattoo right after it was done freshly wrapped up.  I slept in this the first night.  When I woke and removed the plastic I was covered in slimy gooey gunk that was the color of the inks used in my tattoo with a little blood.  I wish I would of had the foresight to take pictures, but I didn't realize I'd be blogging it later.  I half thought about not doing it the next night but my husband convinced me to just do what Larry had advised because the guy knows his tattoos.  So for three nights I did.

By the forth day my tattoo felt almost completely healed.  It was like natural skin again and I had only formed scabs in one or two very small spots on the side of my neck where I was probably stingy with the Aquaphor.  It was the fastest heal time I had ever experienced with a tattoo and I didn't have a single spot that needed retouched. Unlike this star on my wrist from a few years back that has a big bare spot in the center where it had scabbed over the worst.

This method of tattoo aftercare worked better for me then anything I had tried in the past and I plan to use it from now on.

How To Water Marble Nail Polish (Tutorial)

Water marbling seems to be all the rage right now so I decided to give it a try. Here's how I did it and how it turned out!

For my supplies I grabbed a disposable cup filled with warm water, a bobby pin, and my nail polish colors.  .

I went with Zoya's "Bevin" that I got in my April Birchbox, and Juleps "Charlotte" that I got in my April Julep Maven Box.

To get started you just drip drops of nail polish onto the surface of the water.  I'd recommend using a disposable cup or an old cup you don't plan to drink out of again.

It spreads out into a nice circle.  Mine turned out a little bit un-centered because I was on a slightly uneven surface.

Next just put a drop of your second color in the center of the first.

Then the first again...

Then the second and so on.  You don't have to go really fast, but if you waste too much time the edges of the first layers start to dry a bit and it doesn't spread as nicely.

You end up with a pretty sweet bulls eye style blob.

Now it's time to mess it all up and make a new pattern!  Most people use toothpicks, but I didn't have one handy so I grabbed a bobby pin and drug it back and forth until I had a pattern I was happy with.

Now it's time to plunge your finger right down into the center of a spot where you like the pattern best.  I'd suggest wrapping tape around your skin leaving only your finger nail exposed to save on clean up time, but I was moving slow taking pictures with each step so I went in full on naked finger. Don't pull your finger right back out after the plunge it in!!! Before you pull your finger out again, use your bobby pin / toothpick to remove the extra polish that's still on the waters surface so that it doesn't pick up a second layer on the way back out! My finger came out looking like I had some weird psychedelic bubble skin disease.

Now just clean up any polish you have on your skin with polish remover and ta da! You have fancy marble nails! Please excuse my less then fancy finger.  It has red fuzz on it from the polish remover cloth I used to clean it up, and my skins a bit rough but you get the idea.  Now go crazy making your own mix of colors and  patterns and have fun!

Eucerin Spring Professional Repair Kit GIVEAWAY!!! (Ended)

Eucerin recently sent me this awesome spring repair kit so that I could have the opportunity to try out the new Professional Repair lotion for extremely dry skin.  My skin loves to get dry and scratchy when the seasons change, so this was the perfect time to get a hold of this!

It's fragrance free so no need to worry about it interfering with any other scents you might wear.  It has a really lightweight feel.  It's light enough to wear all over the body while still providing the moisture you normally only experience in heavier more greasy lotions.  The first place I put this on myself was on my ankle.  My left ankle has a dry itchy scaly patch that's a continuous battle for me. This made it feel instantly softer and stopped the dry itchy feeling I normally have there. I really like it and plan to continue using on a daily basis after my showers throughout spring to keep my skin healthier.

And here's the best part...

Eucerin is going to send a Spring Repair Kit just like they sent me to one of our readers!  One lucky reader will get..

·         Eucerin Professional Repair (6.8 oz.) – a unique concentrated formula that improves moisture, reserves and strengthens the skin’s barrier to lock in hydration and alleviate tight, flaky skin.

·         Professional Repair uses breakthrough Gluco-Glycerol technology which improves moisture reserves in the skin. Please enjoy a customized Eucerin water bottle so you can be hydrated on the go.

·         Ceramide-3, found in our new Professional Repair formula, helps protects the skin’s barrier. So do sunglasses – so we’re offering you a $50 Sunglass Hut Gift Card.

To win one just complete one or more of the options on the Rafflecopter form below.  This allows us to fairly and randomly pick a winner.  Each option you complete gets you one entry.  The more you do, the more chances you get! Open to all US residents (must have US shipping address).  After the raffle ends the winner will be contacted via e-mail.  If I do not hear back from the winner within 48 hours, a new winner will be chosen at random. This will not be shipped by me personally! I will submit the winners information to Eucerin who will ship the kit directly to the winner.

Lancome Introduces $23 "Le Curler" Eyelash Curler

Before I go off on my little rant here, let me make it clear that I don't have any issues paying a little more for quality products if they are indeed better.  When this popped up on my Facebook stream however, it really brought out my cheap side.  Lancome announced that they just started a 48 hour flash sale offering the ability to be the first to buy and try the new "Le Curler" eyelash curler.  I do like being first so I clicked to have a better look.  In small print on the picture above after you get past the lovely image of the rose petal pressed between the curler you see the price tag.  $23.  Twenty three dollars for an eyelash curler?! Twenty three dollars for a "sale". I've looked and looked at that image trying to see what makes this curler worth $22 more then a basic elf curler but can't for the life of me see any significant difference other then the fact that it reads "Lancome" instead of elf.  I would obviously expect an item from Lancome to cost more then an elf item, but this seems a little excessive to me, even for Lancome, and even if it is indeed superior somehow in performance. A Lancome fan responded by saying that an eyelash curler seems more like a gift with purchase type of item for Lancome, and I agree.  I'm interested in hearing what others think.

4/19/12 Edit to add..
Lancome responded to the many questions on the Facebook wall about cost with this..

Thanks for your question! Le Curler is different thanks to the super gentle, silicone pads. They are designed to make sure that your lashes are protected against breaking and give you a gorgeous, crease-free curl.

I'm still not seeing how that makes it much different then others.  Silicone and similar material pads are not uncommon in lash curlers.

May 2012 Birchbox Will Be "Gossip Girl" Inspired

Birchbox has started sending out emails to subscribers letting us know that in May 2012 we can expect a special edition "Gossip Girl" box.  The e-mail read as follows..

"Today we are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with the CW's hit drama series "Gossip Girl" to create a special edition Birchbox for the month of May filled with Gossip Girl-inspired glamour!

Curated by the series' department head for makeup, Amy Tagliamonti, and department head for hair, Jennifer Johnson, the May box will be branded with "Gossip Girl" key art and will contain chic beauty products inspired by Manhattan's poshest social set. The partnership is timed to the show's season finale (scheduled to air May 14, 8/7c on the CW). For "Gossip Girl" fans, season finale clues will also be part of the in-box materials to drive fans to tune-in on May 14th!"

They also started running online Gossip Girl campaigns (pictured above) to bring in new subscribers. I've never actually seen an episode of Gossip Girls, but if it helps us get a few cool new beauty goodies, I'm all for it.  Even not being a Gossip Girl fan, I am a little excited to see how a themed Birchbox will differ from what we normally get.  I guess we will find out next month!

Edit to add 4/21/2012
The website BellaSugar has released sneak peek pictures of the slipcover our May boxes will have!

MyGlam April 2012

I came home last night to find my April 2012 MyGlam pink bubble mailer waiting for me in my mailbox. I'll just get right to it and show you what I got....

Dermstore Lip Quench 8 gram size.  This is a full size item that sells for $12 on Dermstores website.

Two new brushes that match the MyGlam brush and holder we had previously gotten.  I don't think I saved my holder because I didn't realize more were coming. They are fairly decent brushes.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on eye pencil in Junkie (shimmer deep green)

All-Belle Lashes.  One pair.  I have a lot of trouble putting on falsies so maybe this will motivate me to work on my (lack of) skill in that area.

Alright bag.  I was happy to see an Urban Decay item because it's one of my favorite brands.  I'm not wowed but I still like it and can use the contents and it was worth it's $10 price tag.
